MY REVIEW
Rating ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
The Villain was one of my highly anticipated books of this year, and it did not disappoint. LJ Shen is the queen on angsty romance and this one had angst and tension in spades. The blurb promised a modern retelling of Hades and Persephone and it delivered a beautiful story, with brilliantly portrayed characters.
Cillian (Kill) is sexy and alpha to the extreme, ruthless in business, broody and a complete asshole. But he has his reason for being that way, his scars run soul-deep and as the heir to the Fitzpatrick empire, he can't show any weakness. In his father's eyes, he's always been the perfect son, the golden boy, level-headed, hardworking and set on conquering the world and destroying his enemies. But to maintain his position in the family, he must also get married and have an heir of his own, and that is not something Cillian desires. Until Persephone storms into his office, desperate for help and eager to strike a deal to him. And suddenly the idea of an arranged marriage doesn't sound so bad.
I have a soft spot for misunderstood villains/anti-heroes, and Cillian has become one of my favourites. I love everything about this complex man. And Persephone might seem fragile and naïve, but she proves to be a resilient young woman. She's always so positive and sees the goodness in people and is always eager to help those in need. That’s not to say she has rosy glasses and is ignorant. No, she is aware of the ugliness of the world. I also loved her determination to make Cillian fall in love with her and prove to everyone he is more than the villain portrayed by the media.
The story flowed brilliantly with plenty of action, suspense, passion, sizzling chemistry and steamy scenes. It was an amazing read and I highly recommend it to everyone who loves the arranged marriage trope!
She lives in California with her husband, son, cat and eccentric fashion choices, and enjoys good wine, bad reality TV shows and catching sun rays with her lazy cat.
